UPL Limited is among India’s leading providers of agricultural solutions, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. UPL has a long and illustrious history that dates back to 1969. UPL started as a producer of Red Phosphorus in 1969. At the time of inception, the company was called United Phosphorus Limited. The company ventured into the agrochemical business in 1976. 1984 was the year when UPL was listed on the Indian stock exchanges. A decade later in 1994, UPL acquired UK-based agrochemical firm MTM Agrochemicals in order to enter the European herbicides market. In the years that followed, UPL continued to expand its portfolio. it opened new production centres and acquired more international and domestic firms. 2012 was the year when UPL acquired majority stake in DVA Agro and SIB in Brazil. 2013 was a significant year for United Phosphorus Limited as it rebranded and changed its name to UPL Limited in order to represent its diversified portfolio in a better way. In 2019, UPL through its international arm, UPL Corporation concluded the acquisition of US-based firm Arysta LifeScience (Arysta) from Platform Specialty Products. In the same year, UPL launched a new initiative - OpenAg. The purpose behind OpenAg was to transform the agriculture industry through the creation of an open collaborative agriculture network between companies operating in the industry. In 2022, UPL announced the launch of insecticides containing the patented active ingredient, Flupyrimin. As of March 2022, UPL has a presence in over 138 countries. The firm operates 42 manufacturing plants and 30 R&D facilities. UPL had a workforce of over 13,000 employees as of March 2022. 

Products and services 

UPL has a portfolio of diverse agricultural solutions. Agricultural solutions offered by UPL include conventional crop-protection products such as insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and Adjuvants. Adjuvants increase the effectiveness of crop protection products. The company also offers seed treatment solutions which provide protection against broad spectrum insect attacks. UPL also offers Biosolutions that are made from natural sources. UPL offers Zeba which is a water conservation product that helps increase soil porosity and structure. UPL is also in the business of smart seed development through Advanta Seeds. DECCO is UPL’s post-harvest business which deploys technologies to protect the freshness, flavour and nutritional value of crops.
